Hibari’s closed eyelids didn’t flicker at the sound of soft footsteps approaching. He knew the pattern of those steps, and he also knew what the absence of additional feet meant. Only a moment passed before the deafening crash came, and Hibari finally opened one eye to smirk at the man collapsed beside him.
“Can’t even manage to walk now, without your escorts?” he asked lazily.
The man beside him flushed slightly, but despite that didn’t seem overly embarrassed. He flashed a slight grin and said, “I heard you graduated from Nami Jr. High today. Congratulations, Kyoya.”
Hibari winced, and sat up sharply. “Did you have a reason for coming here?”
“Do I need one?”
Dino’s expression was too gentle for Hibari’s comfort. He sharpened his scowl in response. “No. The punishment for invading my personal space is to be bitten to death, regardless of your intentions.”
Dino laughed—causing Hibari’s stomach to flutter in a sensation which he immediately diagnosed as nausea—and settled down more comfortably. “That seems a little harsh. Are you in a bad mood, Kyoya? I’d think you’d be happy. The chance to move on to a new school… Establish your reign of terror to a whole new faculty and student body… Bite a whole new set of herbivores to death… It sounds invigorating, doesn’t it?”
Hibari stared straight ahead, focusing his eyes on the shapes of the clouds. He refused to acknowledge such a ridiculous question.
“Am I not allowed to be worried about you? I am your tutor. If your inexplicably morose attitude causes your fighting ability to be impaired, it is my responsibility to—”
Even though he’d begun moving in advance, Dino barely managed to dodge the tonfa that came flying toward him. His attempt to block the second ended with him tripping on his whip.
Hibari cast him a disdainful glance before turning away. “You’re not worth fighting, as you are now. Leave.” Dino would be more fun to bite in a real battle, anyway.
Dino didn’t move from his sprawled position on the ground. He blinked up at Hibari thoughtfully—there’s that nauseous feeling again—and asked, “Why are you afraid?”
Hibird landed on Dino’s stomach before Hibari had the opportunity to impale the older man, and he certainly had no intentions of harming Hibird—even if it meant he had to let Dino get away with a question like that. The Italian stroked Hibird’s feathers gently as he continued to stare at Hibari.
“You can always come back here, you know, Kyoya. This place can be your sanctuary for as long as you want.” He smirked, and added, “I doubt anyone would be brave enough to deny you entrance.”
Hibari remained silent. Watching Dino’s long fingers slide across Hibird’s fluffy feathers was strangely calming, and he found himself longing to reach out and do the same.
But then Dino’s subordinates were calling for him, and Hibari dropped down onto the ground and turned away. Dino sat up slowly, cradling Hibird in his arms as he carefully placed the bird onto Hibari’s chest. He paused for a moment, hovering over Hibari, before he gave a half grin and shot down to peck a soft kiss onto Hibari’s cheek. He was already gone when Hibari’s tonfa broke out of its shocked state to attack.
Hibari watched Dino run to join his Family, and then returned his gaze to the sky. He was nauseous again. He felt a brief surge of empathy for that herbivore who got sick at the sight of Bianchi’s face, but the feeling faded quickly, along with all the others. He closed his eyes, letting the peace slide into him, and dozed off to an ethereal chorus of the Nami Jr. High anthem.
What did that Dino know, anyway?
END
[EDIT: So I just reread this (it's now 1 in the *afternoon* instead of *morning*, so my brain is functioning with slightly more accuracy, allowing my eyes to focus enough to discern the characters on the screen), and it's suddenly clear to me *why* I never posted this before. I remembered that it sucked reeeeeally badly, but apparently knowledge as to just *how much* it sucks had faded with the passing... two months, I think, since I scribbled it out. Ha. Ha. Ha. Oops.]
